Until now the goal was simple: get into the top results, the person clicks, they land on your site. Today a share of questions get answered directly on the search page or inside an assistant, and the website appears only as a cited source. The mechanics change; the principle does not.
What actually changed
Three things, concretely:
- Long questions get answered on the spot. “How much does a dental cleaning cost” no longer necessarily leads to a click. The answer appears summarised, with one or two sources.
- Traffic drops, its quality rises. Whoever does reach the site has already passed the general-information stage and is closer to a decision.
- Being the source matters, not only being first. A site cited inside a generated answer gains authority even without a click.
What still holds from classic SEO
Almost everything foundational. A site that engines cannot read quickly and correctly reaches neither the results nor the answers.
- Sound technical structure: speed, clean URLs, a sitemap, no duplicate pages.
- One main heading per page and subheadings that actually describe the content.
- Content that answers a real question, not text written to fill a page.
- Logical internal links, so a reader can go further.
What needs to be added
Short, checkable answers
Put the answer in the first two sentences of the section, then expand. A model looking for something to cite needs a sentence that stands on its own, lifted out of context.
Numbers, dates and context
Concrete statements get cited more often than generalities. “An eight-page presentation website costs around €805” is usable. “Prices vary depending on complexity” is not.
A structure a machine can walk through
Correct structured data (article, frequently asked questions, organisation, product), lists where you enumerate, tables where you compare. Not as a trick, but because that is also easier for a human to read.
Clear signals of authority
An identifiable author, publication and update dates, sources for the figures you quote. A text with no author and no date is hard to put forward as a trustworthy source.
What is worth measuring from now on
Average position stays useful, but it no longer tells the whole story. Also watch:
- Impressions against clicks, by question group. A falling click-through rate at steady impressions is the classic signal of generated answers.
- Direct and branded traffic, which usually grows when you are cited often.
- Conversions per session, not only the number of sessions.
What not to do
Do not rewrite the whole site for machines. Copy written to please a model but hard for a human to read loses exactly the audience you are trying to win. Simple rule: if a satisfied client could read the page out loud without getting bored, it is written well.
What this means for your website
SEO is not disappearing, it is maturing. The winners are the sites that answer real questions clearly, show their sources and are easy to work through for both a hurried human and a program looking for a source it can trust.
