The heart of Transylvania, in one emblematic symbol
Logo and promotional materials for the tourism brand of Cluj-Napoca: a heart that carries within it the silhouette of the city’s emblematic buildings, still in use by the local administration today.
How a whole city fits into one symbol
A city tourism brand speaks simultaneously to foreign tourists, to locals and to the public administration. The symbol had to be memorable and warm, say something true about Cluj-Napoca and stay legible at any size, from a souvenir label to a street billboard.
The shape is a heart, and inside it you can read the silhouette of two emblematic buildings: the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and the Catholic Church of Saint Michael. Together, the two places of worship turn the symbol into a statement about love and about tolerance, the value that defines the city.
The purple is not a decorative choice: it is the colour of royalty. Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary, was born in Cluj-Napoca, and the shade quietly ties the tourism brand to that historical heritage. The “The Heart of Transylvania” descriptor positions the city internationally, with no further explanation needed.
The logo was created in 2010 and is among my very first design projects, made for the portfolio of my certification and authorisation exam as a graphic designer. I later proposed it to the management of the Cluj-Napoca City Hall, it was adopted immediately and it is still used successfully as the city’s tourism brand today.
