A local business does not compete with the whole internet, only with a few companies in the same city. That is a huge advantage, if you use it. The trouble starts when the campaign is set up as if you were selling nationwide.

What “small budget” means and what to expect

Below a certain threshold, advertising cannot produce enough data to be optimised. For a local business, a reasonable starting budget means enough clicks per day to see a pattern within a week, not a quarter. If your budget affords three clicks a day, you do not have a campaign, you have a very slow experiment.

On top of the ad budget comes management: the initial setup and the monthly work on the campaign. Without someone watching it, a small campaign degrades quickly.

The structure that works

Split by service, not by “everything I do”

One ad group per service, with keywords tightly bound to it. The ad has to repeat exactly the service being searched for, otherwise you pay for clicks from people looking for something else.

Narrow the area, correctly

Set the town and a realistic radius, but also check the targeting option: by default, Google can show the ad to people merely interested in the area, not only those in it. For a car workshop, that is the difference between customers and curious tourists.

Negative keywords, from day one

The negative keyword list does more for your budget than any other setting. “Free”, “jobs”, “second hand”, “how to”, competitor names if you are not deliberately targeting them. It is topped up weekly, from the search terms report.

Controlled match types

Broad match burns a small budget in days. Start with phrase and exact match, then widen if the volume is too small.

The landing page matters more than the ad

Send people to the page for the service they searched for, not the home page. A good page for paid traffic has one purpose and supports it:

  • The heading repeats exactly what the person searched for.
  • The phone number is visible immediately, tappable on mobile.
  • A short form: name, phone, one line of context. Every extra field lowers the response.
  • Proof: reviews, completed work, the area you cover.
  • It loads fast on a phone, where most local traffic comes from.

What to measure, so you know it is working

Clicks are not a result. The result is a phone call or an enquiry. Set up measurement for: calls from the ad and from the site, form submissions, WhatsApp taps, direction requests.

Then watch cost per enquiry, not cost per click. A campaign with expensive clicks but many enquiries beats a cheap one that produces nothing.

The mistakes that cost the most

  • Sending all traffic to the home page.
  • No negative keywords, meaning you pay for searches unrelated to your offer.
  • Campaigns left unattended for months.
  • Measuring clicks instead of enquiries.
  • Stopping the campaign after two weeks, before there is any data.

In short

On a small budget you win through precision: few well-matched keywords, a tightly drawn area, a landing page that answers the search exactly, and measurement based on enquiries rather than clicks.
